More dead animals found in China - 410 pigs, 122 dogs & 1,000 dead ducks pulled from rivers in China

  • In the nearly two weeks since thousands of pig carcasses started littering a river running through Shanghai, its residents have been told not to worry. What they haven’t been given are convincing explanations behind the deaths and the dumping.

  • The lack of clarity about the nearly 14,000 dead animals in a river system that supplies drinking water to the Chinese financial center has spawned both theories and dark humor: Residents joke that they can turn on their faucets and get pork broth.

  • Officials have found more than 1,000 deceased ducks in the Nanhe River in Sichuan province (this river though doesn’t supply drinking water). The news comes on top of reports that the number of pig carcasses pulled from Shanghai’s Huangpu River (which does supply drinking water has topped 16,000.

BEIJING - Hundreds more pigs have been found dead in China - this time together with dozens of dogs.

A total of 410 pigs and 122 dogs were discovered in homes and at farms earlier this week in a village that comes under Yanshi city’s jurisdiction in central Henan province, authorities said Wednesday.

The city’s propaganda office said that the deaths were being investigated but that they suspected they had to do with nearby chemical factories. The factories have been ordered to suspend production and help police with a criminal investigation into the incident, according to a report on a Henan provincial news website.

No poisonous gases have been found in tests on the air around the village and its drinking water has met quality standards, said the report, which the propaganda office confirmed.
Local authorities said the deaths have nothing to do with any epidemic or the H7N9 bird flu virus that has recently spread to humans.

Last month, more than 16,000 dead pigs were found in rivers that supply water to Shanghai. The dumping has not been explained, though police had been cracking down on the illegal sale of pork products made from dead, diseased pigs.

Additionally, dead ducks — more than 1,000 of them — were found in a river in southwest China’s Sichuan province, according to state news agency Xinhua.
The birds surfaced in 50 plastic woven bags in the Nanhe river in Pengshan county. BBC reported that Liang Weidong, the deputy director of Pengshan’s publicity office, said that authorities became aware of the situation on Tuesday. They have since removed more than 1,000 deceased ducks, which have been disinfected and buried in a designated area, Liang said.
adoptpets: Just another day in China. More dead pigs and now dead dogs flowing through the water supply. Seriously, what is going on? Rest in peace those poor animals who lost their lives.

Hubble has spotted an ancient galaxy that shouldn’t exist

This galaxy is so large, so fully-formed, astronomers say it shouldn’t exist at all. It’s called a “grand-design” spiral galaxy, and unlike most galaxies of its kind, this one is old. Like, really, really old. According to a new study conducted by researchers using NASA’s Hubble Telescope, it dates back roughly 10.7-billion years — and that makes it the most ancient spiral galaxy we’ve ever discovered.
“The vast majority of old galaxies look like train wrecks,” said UCLA astrophysicist Alice Shapley in a press release. “Our first thought was, why is this one so different, and so beautiful?”

When a group of dog rescuers arrived at the market to show the dogs available for adoption, somebody had left 12 puppies on the street – 8 of them were approximately 5 weeks old.
In shock, the rescuers didn’t know what to do. The group had recently canceled several adoption days at the market because of bad weather, so they were over their capacity with puppies still needing to be adopted out. Also, the abandoned puppies were so small that they needed to be fed every two hours, including at night.
That’s when a spayed stray dog approached, lay down beside the shoe box where the puppies were sleeping, and began caring for them.

She wouldn’t let anyone get near the babies.

Very carefully, the rescuers placed the puppies closer to her.

She began caressing them and offering the warmth of her belly to the newborns.

The maternal instinct kicked in and…

after a few hours, she had milk and was feeding the puppies.

The rescue group named her Vida, which means “life” in Portuguese.

I’m not crying, really…I just have a puppy in my eye…

PHOTOGRAPHER TOURS SHELTERS TO HELP DOGS GET ADOPTED - Our mission is to provide shelter staff and volunteers with the resources to successfully groom and photograph shelter pets, helping give them the second chance they deserve.”

The One Picture Saves a Life initiative teaches animal shelters how to groom and photograph the shelter animals to present them in the best light (probably both literally and figuratively) for adoption. Photographer Seth Casteel is currently touring various shelters in the U.S. to put on workshops. You may be familiar with Casteel’s Underwater Dogs series. The photos above are examples of how different the dogs look depending on how they are presented.

In addition to Casteel, John Paul Pet, The Animal Rescue Site, GreaterGood.org, and the Petfinder Foundation are all partners in this endeavor. Click here to learn more about One Picture Saves a Life. You can also donate to this cause by clicking here. (Photos from One Picture Saves a Life)

Today (April 24th) is World Day for Animals in Laboratories

*video is upsetting but not gory*

This day is about commemorating the animals that have suffered and continue to suffer horribly so that we can deem what we use in our every day lives as “safe”. It is estimated that 100 million animals suffer and die in laboratories every year across the globe by being poisoned, burned, blinded, starved, force-fed and mutilated. These animals suffer and live in fear every single day of their existence.

Thankfully, there are non-animal alternatives to experiments available to replace these tests, but at the moment, they are not being replaced at a fast enough rate. The Doctor Hadwen Trust is one of the charities that fund research into alternatives to animal testing and their website can be found here if you want to know more.

If you would like to raise awareness yourself, Animal Aid can post you a “stop animal experiments” pack which includes an information booklet and leaflets that you can give out. The pack can be requested here.

In the meantime, you can help reduce the suffering of animals by choosing cruelty-free items. Every change you make, no matter how small, matters and you could save the lives of animals everywhere by making these easy changes and we will be one step closer to abolishing these horrific practices.

“Simple civic pleasures atrophied almost overnight. No one wanted to get blown up because they insisted on going out for ice cream. The famed riverfront restaurants went dormant; no more live carp hammered with a mallet and grilled before our eyes. The water-pipe joints in the parks went out of business. Most of the social spaces that defined the city shut down. Booksellers fled Mutanabe Street, the intellectual center of the city with its antique cafes. The amusement park at the Martyrs Monument shut its gates. Hotel bar pianists emigrated. Dust settled over the playgrounds and fountains at the strip of grassy family restaurants near Baghdad University.”
